The North-Atlantic Treaty Organization is the most effective collective security organization in history, which on 4 April will celebrate its 58th anniversary. One of the key principles for a smooth transformation process of the Alliance is the question concerning implementation of new Strategic Concepts and political expansion, which personify the transition from an organization that keeps political stability to one that is a functioning security and safety Alliance. As Ukraine draws closer to the 10 year anniversary of the NATO-Ukraine Charter, which was signed on 9 July 1997 in Madrid, Spain, the realization that a coordinated and forecasted activity plan dealing with Ukraine’s security and defense policy does not exist, is pushing Ukraine into a “strategic vacuum” which brings with it a national security threat. Ukrainian membership in NATO means reinforcing Ukraine’s security. Present day Ukraine must take part in finding a strategic consensus within the Euro-Atlantic partnership, to begin extensive consultations regarding global, political and efficient coordination, and separating the roles and responsibility within the trans-Atlantic area. It stands to reason, that interior concerns for the security of Ukraine are far more significant and clear then the exterior. Therefore, membership within the Alliance is extra-ordinarily important. Cooperation and membership in the Alliance means an orientation towards European values; it gives countries the impulsive urge to open their political systems, form a real market economy, expand democracy and strengthen human rights, increase social guarantees and achieve a European political culture along with a higher living standards. NATO-Ukraine Civic League
there is a call for an active cooperation of Ukraine with NATO within the measures of Ukraine’s obligations to the Alliance and the possible acceptance of Ukraine within the Membership Action Plan during the July visit of NATO-Ukraine Commission. Kyiv, 12 March 2007. |
